“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.” ~ Gautama Buddha And you never see a snake going back to that skin again. Once it sheds it off it's off for good, never to go back to it again. I think we need to apply this process to our thoughts as human beings.  We need to shed off some "dead skin” called bad memories we often choose to carry around and dwell on instead of letting them go. Many of us spend so much time mulling over the negative stuff that has happened to us in the past that we find ourselves stuck and unable to move forward. What’s past is past; that’s why it is in the PAST and revisiting that part of your life is simply taking you back in time, which only wastes your time; unless you are reminiscing on good stuff, or on lessons you learnt. How about you spend more time having previews of what your future could be like. How about you spend more time creating a new history by making sure your future is worth looking forward to.  How?  By... [Continue reading]
Indeed life is like a long unwinding road heading somewhere upcountry; those are always several kilometers long and never really seem to come to an end.  Some parts are straight while some have bends. Some are uphill and some go downhill. Some parts have bumps while others have potholes; potholes of varied depths and sizes. But they all make part of YOUR road. Question is, do you know your destination? Are you on the right road?  As long as you are on the right road, all the challenges (potholes, bends, sharp corners, bumps, etc) that come while you are on that road don’t really matter. They are there for a purpose. They are there to prepare you for your destination (destiny). And even if you are on the wrong road, you can still decide to find your way to the right road, as long as you know where you want to go in the first place. All the same, enjoy the road you are on currently, complete with all its bends and turns, bumps and potholes.  And if you find yourself in unfamiliar... [Continue reading]
“Activity and rest are two vital aspects of life. To find a balance in them is a skill in itself. Wisdom is knowing when to have rest, when to have activity, and how much of each to have. Finding them in each other - activity in rest and rest in activity - is the ultimate freedom.” ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar You need to rest in order to be productive. Your brain needs to shut down and cool off after a day of exerting it (assuming you did). Everything needs a rest! Like Mark Buchanan said, “Most of the things we need to be most fully alive never come in busyness. They grow in rest.” Don’t take your rest time for granted. Embrace it and be thankful for it.
Assuming you are on your laptop at night and then power suddenly goes off, what happens?  If your keyboard is illuminated then the light going off does not affect you. But if you are using one of those old laptops without illuminated keyboards, then unless you know how to type without looking at your keyboard you might as well shut down because typing will become a nightmare for you. When darkness comes that’s when an illuminated keyboard gets its chance to show off its light. And so should we. In the words of Francis Bacon, “In order for the light to shine so brightly, darkness must be present" In life we will encounter darkness (sickness, failure, loss, financial challenges, etc). If we do not have an internal light that helps counter these challenges then life becomes very tough.  So what is your internal light? It is…. ~ the hope you have that things will be better tomorrow even when you don’t know/see how. ~ when you believe in yourself when no one else does. ~ when you maintain... [Continue reading]
When climbing a series of hills, to move from one hill to the next you have to climb down the current hill, pass through the connecting valley and climb up the next hill. Unless you are super(wo)man, bat(wo)man or one of those superheroes, the only way to the next plateau is by going down, then through the valley and up again until you get to the peak of the next hill. And so it is with life. Every time you achieve some success and want to move on to the next level of success in your life, you will have to go through a valley before your upward journey towards your next hill of success commences. The key to success is to REPEAT THIS UNTIL DESIRED RESULTS ARE ACHIEVED. The valleys in life are represented by many things; Could be sicknesses that drain your bank account; bankruptcy, divorce; failure in some aspect of your life; loss in business; sabotage by people you trusted; weak shilling, etc.  Every tough situation is a valley in your life. What many people have never realized... [Continue reading]
Today marks the beginning of a new month. It is a reminder that 4 months are gone; 8 more to go. It is also a reminder that what’s gone is gone and cannot be recovered, however, you have the gift of today, and you can get a lot done if you put your mind to it. Forget all you didn’t do before. Look forward to all you can still do with this new opportunity of a new month you now have. A new month is like a new blank notebook, waiting for you to fill it up. What will you fill it up with? Make sure you fill yours with positivity, with inspiration and with lots of possibilities. If nothing has worked for you in the past four months, use this notebook to renew your mindset and definitely, your results will be different this month. Remember, unless you decide to take a different approach, unless you change your mindset, you might be in a new month but you will still be doing the same old stuff you were doing before.  A new beginning means forgetting everything in your past and focusing on a... Ever sat on your leg for a long time, or folded your hands for a long time without stretching them? What happens when you eventually stretch? Pins and needles, right? That is because our bodies were not created to stay immobile for long.  That’s why you’ll fall asleep in one position, but when you wake up you find yourself sleeping in a different position, not necessarily because you were having a bad dream but because your body can’t stay in one position for long. Your brain unconsciously moves it.  Well, I’m not a doctor, but that’s my story and I’m going to stick to it. Did you know that your brain is a muscle too, and that it needs regular exercise, otherwise it becomes weak and eventually withers and becomes useless? Yes. Contrary to what people think, the more you use your brain, the stronger it becomes. The brain is not like a bar of soap which slowly diminishes as you use it. It is more like a seedling; the more you take care of it (by using it), the bigger it grows. In... [Continue reading]
.......unless of course you don’t have any ideas.  In the words of George Bernard Shaw:“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” That is why you should spend time thinking every day. Besides thinking, it is equally important to surround yourself with people who also think, people who have ideas. Evaluate the people around you; do you get anything new from them every time you meet them, or are you the one who is always giving them your ideas? Surround yourself with people who inspire you, people who ignite fire in your heart, people who are a positive influence to you.
I’d never thought about this until I thought about it. Sorry if this sounds like a #YogiBerra quote but it is not.  Not sure why or what I was doing when I suddenly thought of looking up the meaning of darkness from the dictionary. According to the dictionary, darkness is the partial or total absence of light. In other words, where there is no light, there is darkness. No wonder people use the saying, “he is in a very dark place right now” when someone is going through a challenge or suffering depression, or has lost hope in life in more ways than one. Where there is Light there is life. You try switching the lights off in the middle of dinner at home and you’ll see what happens to you; you’ll probably turn into a meal yourself, torn into shreds by your family members because of taking away their light. Light illuminates; if you are “in darkness" about a certain situation, seek information. Light clarifies; if you are “in the dark” about a certain topic, seek clarification.  Light... “It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.” ~ Dale Carnegie And that right there is why I say happiness is a choice.  It is a choice because once you know what makes you unhappy, you'll not want to stick around and wait for it to bring you unhappiness, will you? A normal person will not. He or she will gravitate towards what brings them happiness.  Alot may not be going the way you want it to, but that's not a ticket for you to be unhappy. Instead, choose what you allow your thoughts to dwell on but don't encourage negative thoughts in your mind. "There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.” ~ Epictetus Choose to be happy even when you feel you shouldn't, and happiness will follow you wherever you go.    Ignite happiness wherever you are. Inspire and influence others with your thoughts and words, causing happiness... [Continue reading]
Some peple are so negative that every time they say something it affects all those around them negatively. Those are the kind of people to be avoided; they are toxic. Their negativity is so strong that it causes more crippled minds instead of creating ripples of positivity all around them.  To such people I say this; if you can’t say anything positive then please don’t say it at all. Use your mouth to cause ripples of positivity in the sea of life.  Be a ripple causer.... Cause ripples of joy and happiness. Cause ripples of positive energy. Cause ripples of possibilities.  Cause ripples of peace and harmony.  Cause ripples of blessings.  Cause ripples of innovation and creativity.  Cause ripples of unity and togetherness.  Cause ripples of Love and affection.
For a chef to make a buffet meal and have it ready for his guests to indulge, a lot goes into the preparation of the food. First, he has to know who his guests are and whether they are vegetarian or non-veggie. This information helps him prepare the menu items. Once he has the menu items, the next step is to find the ingredients needed, the tools (such as pots and pans) he will need to prepare the meal, not forgetting the cutlery he will need to serve the meal.Knowing all these details will help him prepare stuff in advance which ensures he doesn’t leave out any important element of the meal. He also knows how much time he will need to prepare the meal since he already knows what to prepare and how long it will take. The same case applies to success.Just like a meal does not just happen, success doesn’t just happen either. Success is the result of meticulous preparation, proper blending of all the required ingredients such as resilience, dedication, discipline, passion, focus,... [Continue reading]
